A 4.2 335hp V8 with roughly 100,000 miles all under 8k. There has to be a catch right? They look so contemporary.

A8 L .
Do not stop yourself short. Go long.

If you can stomach paying that month in maintenance annually, I would highly recommend this car.
Sincerely,
Late Model Audi Owner

...thats what she said?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:21 |

Except the D3 doesnt have that variant of the 4.2
The D3 A8 has a timing belt just like my D2 A8L.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:22 |

The catch is that it is an Audi.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:22 |

good thing I never said i was an Audi professional
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:24 |

I love the D3 A8. CEO of the company I work for has a silver D3 A8.
I still have a soft spot for my D2 A8L though... because Ronin.

This is good. A8 ownership gives you an entirely new, more pleasant outlook on life.

You rang, dear?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:32 |

If only it was a little cheaper
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:32 |
|
Yeah maybe I could start a chauffeur business to pay for the repairs
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:33 |
|
What could go wrong?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:33 |
|
The catch is that the $8k cost of entry is only the first $8k. Think of it like one of those shitty instalment plans from an informercial.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:33 |
|
I am sure. But I am also afraid it would give the wallet a heart attack
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:33 |
|
Exactly. My life would likely be ruined
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:34 |
|
Is the D2 A8L a problem child?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:35 |
|
I know. The 8k is just an entry fee into a world of unbearable pain. Good thing the seats would be so comfortable
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:37 |

So far I’ve had ignition coils and a solenoid of some sort. It’s not cheap, but it’s not frighteningly expensive either. Be sure whichever one you’re looking at is looked over by at least one trusted independent mechanic who knows Audis. Other that that, just be wary of the air suspension (which has less of a tendency to fail in this than in other cars).

![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:38 |

No, the D2 is the first generation (think Ronin) but had a really long run. The D3 is the second generation A8 and was a complete redesign. That also means a lot more electronics.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:38 |
|
I have had an ignition coil go bad in my truck and it cost about 400 bucks. Is the A8 coil more?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:38 |

I didn’t say it wouldn’t be worth it. :)
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:39 |

I laughed but on a serious note. Fuck that guy
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:40 |

No.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:40 |
|
I am surprised
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:41 |
|
Yeah, it was one of those “too soon” moments. At least you got a quick chuckle out of it. I hope that guy rots in prison and never gets into a car ever again.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:43 |

How does the saying go? The most expensive used car you can buy is a cheap AudiAudi?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:45 |

*that much
(but I’m assuming you read it that way anyway....stupid kinja won’t let me edit my original reply)

Lots of money to do the front end .....

To tell you I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:56 |

I got my dad to buy an ‘04 years ago (in 2010?). Made sure the suspension was solid first and his has been mostly problem free, just a few sensors here and there.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 21:59 |

But when I call you never seem to be home.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:06 |

There is a chain missing on the right side. Also a pully
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:07 |

Wait: one chain is missing.

It’s more of like a bleeding ulcer than a heart attack...
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:10 |
|
What can go wrong with the suspension?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:14 |
|
That sticker on the windshield looks like the sticker I have in order to park at my school. It’s even the same shape and color.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:17 |
|
Why are you in the greys in oppo and why is this image pending approval?
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:24 |
|
Let’s see..... 2000's Audi.... I think that there’s the catch
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:28 |
|
I totally missed the sticker at first
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:29 |

Audi air suspension of that era is notoriously unreliable. My parents bought an Allroad of the same time period for $10,000 AUD and it cost us twice that to run it for a year, before selling it.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:30 |
|
Surely you mean Phaeton.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:47 |
|
Its just complicated air suspension. IIRC its like $5k to replace, so its something you get checked out before buying.
Also IIRC, there is a $1k normal spring aftermarket option.
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:48 |
|
Come to the dark side
![]() 02/22/2016 at 22:59 |

The Allroad is a very risky car
![]() 02/22/2016 at 23:00 |

Nope the Audi looks better
![]() 02/22/2016 at 23:01 |

Must not fall much because I have never heard anything about it

I think you just answered your own question
![]() 02/23/2016 at 00:08 |

Honestly couldn’t tell ya. I recommended it to him because it snows a lot where he lives and somewhere online it said to get the suspension checked out. He did and the car has been great.
I know its just one example, but the one ‘04 A8L I know has been reliable.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 04:04 |

won't be cheap to run.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 06:41 |

But you would have great fun while it worked!
![]() 02/23/2016 at 07:45 |

So you want something fast that you can shove around a little. You have plans for a nitrous kit too?
![]() 02/23/2016 at 08:49 |

More speed the merrier right?

you where yesterday when i posted this.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 11:06 |

yes. the catch is they were not available as a manual in the USA, but that is actually “easily” remedied.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
did somebody watch Ronin recently? :P
![]() 02/23/2016 at 12:19 |

A big luxury boat shouldn’t be a manual anyway and what the hell is Ronin you are like the third person to mention that

The catch is repair costs, same with most late model German cars sadly...
